Supernatural Star Misha Collins Jokingly Comes out As Bisexual, Then as Straight
By David T. Valentin
Fans of the hit-series Supernatural went wild just a few days ago when Misha Collins, known for his role as Castiel the gay angel in love with Dean Winchester, came out as bisexual. And then, to fans’ disappointments, said it was all an accident and that he was straight.
You might be wondering how exactly someone accidentally comes out as bisexual and you’re right to wonder.
At Entertainment’s Supernatural Official Convention in New Jersey, Collins began a joke with, “By show of force: how many of you would consider yourself introverts? How many extroverts? And how many bisexuals?” The fans cheered at the words, probably excited to hear some sort of personal story. Collins continues, “I’m all three.”
Of course, any actual person would see this as a coming out and perhaps a fitting coming out given the love many fans have for his character Castiel and the love the angel had for Dean. But Collins walked back his statement on Twitter saying he apologizes for “the clumsiness” of his language.
He explains, “My clumsy intention was to wave off actually discussing my sexuality, but I badly fumbled that and understand that was seen as me coming out as bisexual.”
Most people failed to see where the joke was, and understandably so.
“This was not my intention so I need to correct the record: I am not bisexual,” Collins says. “I happen to be straight, but I am also a fierce ally and the last thing I want to do is falsely co-opt the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community. I believe and fully support that we need to sanctify the human right to express our identities honestly and to be free to love whomever we choose openly.”
So sure, accidentally coming out is a bit of an unusual and unlikely situation, but to be honest I’m more curious to know what he was even trying to say with his joke?
