After upbeat and inspirational Hip Hop artist Lizzo accepted her award last night at the Grammys for Record of the Year, which featured her hit song About Damn Time, the pop artist made a teary, confessional speech to Beyonce that had all of us in happy tears.
After a shocked Lizzo embraced Adele and other celebrities, she stood on the stage absolutely awestruck. Lizzo first dedicated her award to the late American singer-songwriter Prince, saying, “When we lost Prince I decided to dedicate my life to positive music, and I was like I don’t care if my positivity bothers you, what’s wrong with you!”
A fitting way of telling the haters to piss off - haters which Lizzo has plenty of for simply being a successful, thriving plus-sized Black woman who never lets the negativity get to her.
After giving thanks to her producers, her family and friends, Lizzo turned to Beyonce and instantly shed tears. “In the fifth grade I skipped school to see you perform,” she said. “My sister got me out of school, it was literature so it’s good. You changed my life. You sang that gospel medley, and the way you made me feel made me I was like I want to make people feel this way with my music.”
